Differentiating Toxic Waste and Spinoff Deep Dives with Rich Howe
The Special Situations Report Episode 19
Episode 19 of our weekly Special Situations Report Podcast is out and can be found on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Podcasts.
This week we are absolutely thrilled to have my friend Rich Howe, the founder of Stock Spin-off Investing, as the second guest on this podcast. Here is an excerpt of what I wrote about Rich in my book The Event-Driven Edge in Investing:
“He started his career in the equity research division at one of the oldest investment firms in the United States, Eaton Vance, and eventually went on to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Like many of us in the special situations world, he was inspired by Joel Greenblatt and decided to strike out on his own by launching Stock Spinoffs Investing, a website dedicated to spinoffs.
I have followed Rich’s work closely for several years and appreciate the amount of time he puts into each situation, which can be as much as 40 hours per spinoff.”
He is also the host of his own podcast, which is dedicated to spinoff situations.
Our conversation with Rich spanned multiple fascinating topics – ranging from his investing background, attractive strategies, investments that worked out well like the South African thermal coal company Thungela Resources, key catalysts for spinoffs, differentiating valuable companies from toxic waste, and so much more.
We also discussed two spinoffs including the spinoff of Resolute Holdings Management (RHLD) from CompoSecure (CMPO) and the final separation of the Starz (STRZ) business and Lionsgate Studios (LION).
We half-jokingly hatched plans to potentially launch a special situations focused conference in Park City, Utah. If that is of interest to you, please let us know in the comments or by email.
